The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1 is a 12.1MP ruggedized compact with 4.6x optical zoom (28-128mm). It has a 2.7-inch LCD, 720p HD video mode, face recognition and AF tracking. Waterproof to 3m, dustproof and shockproof for 1.5 falls, it measures 98x63x23mm...

Following the impending nuclear/swine flu/nanotechnology apocalypse, you’ll be glad you invested a few extra quid in this bullet-proof camera. Its metal shell and toughened LCD can easily resist the attacks of brain-starved zombies while the wideang...

Panasonic’s designers may have suffered one too many surf-board wipeouts. The FT1’s buttons are small and awkwardly placed, and its main control dial is slippery, making it difficult to change settings in the best of conditions, let alone when...

If you’re intent on punishing your camera, the Olympus Tough-8000 can dive deeper, fall further and freeze, er, cooler than the Panasonic. But if you want a decent all-round, all-weather snapper, the FT1’s wider zoom range, good stabilisation...

There is no clear winner here, with each camera having its own strengths and weaknesses. The little Fuji W33 is the ideal budget snapshot camera for an active lifestyle, but the Canon D10, while less pocketable is the best performer underwater and has the best overall image quality...

The 12.1 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1 is waterproof to a depth of 3m and sports a design that could be described as ‘hard as nails’, with its solid outer shell and chiselled looks. It’s not just cosmetic, as the FT1 can be dropped from 1.5m withou...

For $699, Panasonic brings you the LUMIX DMC-FT1, which you can drop on the ground, in the snow, in the water and on the sand, without damaging it. Its the companys first toughened camera, and the only rugged camera on the market to date thats also capable of shooting high-definition video. We first played with the pre-production model of this camera in February and were largely impressed with its features, user-friendliness and picture quality. Now that weve got our hands on the actual ret...

There’s plenty to like about the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FT1 apart from its rugged build — it takes great still images and good videos, making it a true hybrid. We think Panasonic should ditch the zoom slider and replace it with buttons, and also...

Panasonic is a new-comer to the world of rugged cameras and so one would expect it to have plenty of teething problems, but Panasonic have definitely done extremely well in proving them wrong. The Lumix DMC-TS1 is one sleek piece of engineering and is...

Smooth in design; good performance; superb photo and video quality; HD movie capture, a wideangle lens, and a long battery life.

Photos are not sharp, prices are a bit steep.

The TS1 qualifies for both a rugged as well as an everyday pocket camera. It may be priced at $399.99, but the TS1 is something that you cannot judge by looking at the price tag. Panasonic have really pulled a rabbit out of the hat here with the TS1...

4.6x wide-angle lens. 720p AVCHD video capture. Intuitive interface. HDMI port.

Image quality drops significantly at the outer edges of the frame. In our tests, water leaked into the battery compartment, resulting in some internal rusting. Zoom slider only worked sporadically after several trips to the beach.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 is built for abuse, but in our tests this ruggedized shooter didnt quite live up to expectations...
